Higher education institutions (HEIs) are crucial for educating future leaders and promoting sustainability. This study calculates the carbon footprint of Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Medellín, using UNE-ISO 14064–1 and WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol standards. In 2019, the carbon footprint was approximately 7250.52 tons CO2 eq, with 0.432 tons CO2 eq per person. Major emission sources included transportation (58.51%), wastewater (17.01%), and electricity (14.03%). The study highlights the unique environmental conditions affecting Colombian HEIs and suggests strategies for reducing emissions, providing a methodological benchmark for other institutions.
