 Descripción:

This study introduces a prototype of a human-powered hydroponic system and evaluates its environmental and economic impacts using life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC). The cultivation of lettuce serves as a case study, comparing the system to conventional soil and greenhouse-based methods. Results showed that the battery and power system are major environmental hotspots. Increasing the yield of the system can significantly reduce its environmental impact, making it competitive with conventional methods in several impact categories. Economically, achieving a break-even point is challenging within a 15-year lifespan unless yield is improved or system lifespan is extended.
